Lunas Armband emerged from a collaboration with Mario Golden and Andreas Robertz as part of the transatlantic project ‘Intimate Relations‘.
The project aimed to explore the complex subject of the long‑term effects of the Third Reich on the psyche of young women belonging to the third generation both in Germany and in the United States. As author of the German section, I took part in several workshops in which five actresses had previously conducted family research on the topic. From the improvisations and collected texts came the play Der Speicher (The Attic), which in the course of time developed into Luna’s Bracelet.
Parallel to our writing and rehearsals in Germany, the New York playwright Robin Rice Lichtig was working with young Jewish women on the same theme, resulting in the play Searching for a New Sun.
In April 2010, both plays were presented in New York at the Martin E. Segal Theatre Center in a staged reading.
Lunas Armband saw its world premiere the same year in Berlin‑Pankow at the former orphanage of the Jewish Community in Berlin. The actresses from the New York production were invited guests.
We all learned a great deal from this experience, above all that the traumas of the Holocaust and the Nazi terror regime are passed down across generations. The parallel research on both sides of the Atlantic has shown how deeply the wounds still run and how important it is to reach out to each other and work together toward coming to terms with the past.
